Ashley Maria will be screening three student films followed by discussion of her work

On Thursday Dec. 17th Third Place Coffeehouse will continue its Local Filmmaker Screening (LFS) series with three new films written and directed by local filmmaker Ashley Maria.

Developed in her graduate program at the University of Southern California's School of Cinematic Arts, Raleigh native Ashley Maria will present short films that are approximately 6 minutes in length. These include:

-- "Stuck"
Walter wakes up in a stranger's bed once again, but this time, sneaking out isn't so easy. While the mystery woman showers, Walt tries to leave, but his keys have another plan.

-- "Gardenia"
Amy needs to fight back. She needs to leave. One day, her boyfriend's anger goes over the edge. This is her chance. Will she run?

-- "Friday Night Fright"
With his parents finally gone, Andy is left alone to watch his favorite late night horror show, "Friday Night Fright." But – in tonight's episode, Andy is not the only one doing the watching.

"I am excited to be screening at Third Place Coffeehouse," said Ashley Maria. "Their LFS series is a great opportunity for filmmakers like me to share our work in a supportive and engaging environment."

As a Film and TV master's student at the USC School of Cinematic Arts, Ashley Maria is strengthening her technical production skills and learning to be a better storyteller through film.

"I met Ashley Maria at the Full Frame Film Festival in Durham where she was a Student Fellow; the only freshman from UNC to receive that honor," said Tim McKay, a producer and director at Fruition Film. "As she interacted with documentary filmmakers from around the world, I could see how eager she was to learn the art of filmmaking."

McKay hired Ashley to work as an intern and freelancer while she attended school.

"We are proud and thrilled to be sponsoring Ashley Maria's student film premier here in Raleigh," said McKay.

Located at 1811 Glenwood Avenue in the Five Points area of Raleigh, the Third Place Coffeehouse LFS event will be held on December 17 at 8:00pm and is free and open to the public. Harpist J. Rosaleigh Stringfellow will entertain film viewers from 6:00-8:00pm.

On My Honor, I Will

Aug. 29, 2010 - (By: Gary Tomlinson) "Learning from the school of hard knocks can be very informing, but often the tuition is too high! We should learn from other people's experiences." The purpose of this column is to share great business wisdom from the experiences of authors like Jim Collins, Michael Gerber, Gary Harpst, Michael LeBoeuf, Ron Willingham, Randy Pennington and others. Because when you combine great business education with your own business experiences the outcome you'll receive is far greater than the sum of its parts.

The wisdom of Randy Pennington's new book; "On My Honor, I Will; The Journey to Integrity-Driven Leadership" has been chosen to share with you this week. The seed for this book began with five words: "He's a REAL BOY SCOUT." Those words were spoken to Randy Pennington by his client who used them to describe his boss. They were not meant as a compliment. His client's contention that honor and integrity are not consistent with long-term success concerned Randy then and continues to do so today. It was the catalyst that caused him to write this book.

Unfortunately his client's belief is shared by many others today.   More »
