(Durham NC) October 23, 2009—Triangle Orthopaedic Associates PA has become the first medical facility in the state of North Carolina to offer Upright™, Multi-position MRI, the most patient-friendly MRI scanner in the world. Unlike traditional MRI scans where patients are forced to lie down while a large tunnel-like tube encircles them, Upright, Multi-position MRI, can scan patients not just while they are lying down but while standing, sitting or bending. Triangle Orthopaedic unveiled the new device at a special VIP event Thursday October 22.
Magnetic Resonance Imaging, or MRI, is one of the most accurate and reliable methods available to acquire images of the body. This non-invasive diagnostic tool, which uses magnetic fields and radio frequency pulses to help physicians diagnose a variety of medical conditions, was first introduced almost 30 years ago by the Fonar Group, developer of the FDA-approved Upright Multi-Position MRI.
The benefits offered by the Upright, Multi-position MRI are extensive for both patients and physicians.
"While the Upright, Multi-position MRI is ideal for virtually every type of patient and condition, it is particularly beneficial for people who suffer from claustrophobia and cannot tolerate the "closed in" feeling associated with a traditional MRI machine", said Dr. Thomas Dimmig of Triangle Orthopaedic Associates. "The Upright, Multi-position MRI is also beneficial in scanning larger patients as well as infants and young children, who often must be sedated while undergoing the procedure. In fact, with the Upright, Mult-position MRI, babies and children can sit or sleep peacefully on their parent's lap during the entire process".
While patients can be scanned in just about any position - recumbent, standing or even bending - patients are typically scanned in a comfortable, seated position while watching a 42" flat screen TV. Upright, Multi-position MRI offers obvious benefits for the patient and provides physicians with a superior diagnostic tool, ultimately leading to improved
surgical outcomes. Using the Upright, Multi-position MRI, doctors are able to see
images of the body in motion to help determine exactly how and where people are experiencing pain. Seeing diagnostic scans while the patient is sitting or standing allows
doctors to see where pressure on joints and discs is occurring. Upright, Multi-position MRI scans are also more dynamic than traditional MRIs in that they provide images while the patient is in various positions including flexion, extension and rotation.
"With Upright, Multi-position MRI we are able to see extremely detailed and revealing images not available using traditional MRI", explained Dr. Dimmig. "Superior images give us the ability to make a more accurate diagnosis and see problems that are often not visible using a recumbent-only MRI. In fact, traditional MRIs sometimes miss what is wrong with the patient or can underestimate the severity of the problem. Higher resolution, dynamic images can lead to a more accurate diagnosis and ultimately, a better surgical outcome for the patient."
The Upright, Multi-position MRI is available at the Southpoint Professional Center location of Triangle Orthopaedic Associates which is located at 249 E. Hwy 54, Durham, NC 27713.
